This walk does not require pre-booking.
Starting from the Cowhouse Bank car park we head down the road before turning right towards Riccal Dale Wood. We drop down into the valley before heading steeply uphill towards a minor road. A long this road offers good views across the valley. At the end of the road we join a track onto the moorland.
We follow the track round to a patch of 3 fields. It is then uphill to the road and across it towards the forest. Heading through the forest we then briefly re-join the moorland before we are back in the forest again on the final stretch back to the cars.
At just over half way through the walk, there is a shallow stream crossing so waterproof boots are strongly recommended.
Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead around livestock and under close control at all other times.
After the walk, there is the option of heading into Helmsley for refreshments
Parking arrangements:
Free parking in the Cowhouse Bank car park. There isn’t a huge amount of parking so please car share where possible.
The car park can be found by taking Carlton Road opposite the petrol station in Helmsley, following this road until you come across a Forestry England car park on your left.
