Description:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: This walk is limited to 15 places (including the walk leader), these MUST be booked in advance through Eventbrite which will be available the week leading up to the walk. Anyone who has not booked a place will not be allowed on this walk. See the Ramblers guidelines for info on taking part in our walks.

Join us rounding off May Bank Holiday weekend in style with an afternoon amble from Kirkham Priory to Howsham Wood and back to the nearby pub. This will be a circular walk with waterside, woodland and rolling meadow/pasture scenery, passing a twin Archimedes Screw micro-hydro feature and Howsham Hall on the opposite bank of the River Derwent.

At the end of the walk we will be visiting The Stone Trough Inn (splitting into groups of 6 or less) which has plenty of outdoor seating with views up and down the valley, with the freedom to linger and enjoy a refreshing 'sundowner' as the May Day sun sets.

Parking arrangements:
The Kirkham Priory car park is free and the walk is intended to avoid peak times. There is also the option to park at The Stone Trough Inn (if they permit this) and walk down the road to the walk start, to later return for a drink/meal.

Public transport:
Kirkham Priory can be reached by bus using the Coastliner 843 service (hourly) and walking 20 minutes from the bus stop to the walk start. Contact the walk leader to meet at the bus stop before the walk; this is essential as the path can be tricky to follow where it goes through the woods to avoid the steep bend of Onhams Lane past Shepherdfields Ln.

The bus service is live tracked via app. The closest stop is Whitwell Hill; the 15:23 from York Rail Station arrives here at 15:58 (which allows time to reach the walk start). For other stops look at the timetable (select "all stops") on the Transdev Go app.

For the return journey the walk leader will accompany you back to the bus, this is likely to be the 20:30 from Whitwell Hill to York (to allow time for relaxing at the pub after the walk!)
