Description:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: This walk is limited to 15 places (including the walk leader), these MUST be booked in advance through Eventbrite - see link at the bottom of the walk description. Anyone who has not booked a place will not be allowed on this walk. See the Ramblers guidelines for info on taking part in our walks.

This is a loop walk from Welburn to various monuments around the undulating landscape just outside of Castle Howard. Scenery includes Chanting Hill with sweeping views back to Welburn church and the outer wall of Castle Howard. We will also pass the "King Oak" in Pretty Wood, a peaceful ancient woodland, and stroll over to Centenary Way via various monuments, namely The Pyramid, New River Bridge, Temple and Kirk Hill Mausoleum.

Towards the end of the walk we will divide into two groups of 6 or less, and amble into Welburn heading for either the Dogh cafe or the Crown and Cushion pub, both of which have plenty of outdoor seating, and provide a nice spot for a relaxing afternoon before heading home.

It is recommended to bring sturdy walking footwear as the trail is uneven in places. If the weather is dry we may stop for lunch during the walk, so you may wish to bring something to sit on such as a folding sit-mat or small picnic rug. Dogh Cafe in Welburn sells sandwiches, pastries etc if you prefer to pick something up beforehand. The walk is generally suitable for dogs, however, certain sections cross farmland so keep them on a lead at these points.

Parking arrangements:

Opposite the Church in Welburn and on-street parking on Chanting Hill Close.

Public transport:

Welburn can be reached by bus using the 843 Coastliner service which runs hourly on Sundays and is live tracked via app. Get off at Welburn Lodge then walk 15min into the village via the Greets House Rd footpath. The walk start time allows those catching the 843 Coastliner from York (e.g. departing Train Station @9:18am) or Malton (e.g. departing Railway Street @9:32am) to reach Welburn with plenty of time.

For other stops look at the timetable (select "all stops") on the Transdev Go app.

For the return journey it is recommended to buy a flexible ticket to allow time for relaxing in Welburn after the walk and catching one of the regular buses back.

If you are travelling by bus please contact the walk leader; there is the option to meet at the bus stop before the walk.
