IMPORTANT INFORMATION: This walk is limited to 12 places (including the walk leader), these MUST be booked in advance through Eventbrite - see link at bottom of the walk description. Anyone who has not booked a place will not be allowed on this walk.
This is a loop walk from Welburn to various monuments around the undulating landscape just outside of Castle Howard. At the beginning we ascend Chanting Hill with sweeping views back to Welburn church and the outer wall of Castle Howard. Shortly after, we pass the "King Oak" in Pretty Wood, a peaceful ancient woodland. From there we stroll over to Centenary Way and have lunch amid various monuments, namely The Pyramid, New River Bridge, Temple and Kirk Hill Mausoleum.
Towards the end of the walk we will divide into two groups of 6 or less, and amble into Welburn heading for either the Dogh cafe or the Crown and Cushion pub, both of which have plenty of outdoor seating, and provide a nice spot for a relaxing afternoon before heading home at our leisure.
Parking arrangements: Opposite the Church in Welburn and on-street parking.
Public transport: For those travelling from York, the Castle Line bus to Malton arrives at the Crown & Cushion in Welburn at 10:00, which is a few minutes walk from the meeting point. This bus passes York Station Avenue at 09:00 and York The Stonebow at 09:08. For other stops look at the timetable (select "all stops") on the Transdev Go app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.transdevbus
For the return journey we will aim to allow plenty of time for walking back into Welburn to catch the 14:32 to York, hopefully with chance for a drink/snack in Welburn beforehand.
You are welcome to attend up to three of our walks before you need to sign up as a member of the Ramblers
