Description:

Arguably the most picturesque stretch of the Wolds Way, the path from Thixendale to Wintringham presents a beautiful variety of landscapes accompanied by a kaleidoscope of butterflies and wild flowers. Hidden inside the rolling valleys, facets of twelve centuries of local history can be found amongst the cows, sheep, and occasionally peacocks.

After meeting in Wintringham and car sharing to Thixendale, the route traverses the rolling dales northward, before following the contours until the ruins of St Martin’s Church are sighted below us. While descending the hill we will step back in time around five hundred years as we enter the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy. Journeying through the valley we jump forward to a more industrial age, crossing the disused Malton & Driffield Junction Railway.

With views across the ripening barley the path continues to Wharram le Street and on through the clouds of aforementioned butterflies. After lunch and a meander through the woodland, the rooftops and spire of Wintringham are revealed as perhaps the most Hockey-esque vista en route.

A gentle descent brings us closer to our objective, punctuated by poppy fields before crossing the beck into Wintringham. The beginning of the next stage lies on the hill ahead of us, but not before reaching the acorn carving which marks the end of our adventure for the day.

🅿️ Layby in Wintringham by the church at the meeting point, or on street parking in Thixendale near the village hall (please park considerately).

🚌 There do not appear to be any suitable options for access by public transport.

🥪 You will need to bring a packed lunch, there is nowhere to buy food or drink on the walk.

🥾 Ensure to bring hiking shoes/boots, and hopefully sun cream!

🍺 Option at end for drink at The Coach & Horses, Rillington.

🚻 Unfortunately there are no public toilets on this route.

🐶 Dogs are welcome but MUST be kept on a lead due to livestock in the fields. Please make sure in advance there is someone happy to carshare with a dog.
