Meet at the front of the Fountains Abbey visitor centre, where there is a café and ice-cream stand for anyone who needs sustenance before the walk, ready to go at 10.30am prompt. There is ample free car parking.
The walk will begin by passing through the scenic Skell Bank woods. When we tried this walk in August, there were lots of beautiful butterflies … maybe some will still be around in early October? We will then have a complete change of scenery as we cut through open farmland and head towards our lunch stop. Lunch will be next to an historic tower, on top of a hill with wonderful views towards Ripon and the estates of Fountains Abbey.
The next treat will be passing through the grounds of Markenfield Hall, which was built in 1310 and is surrounded by a moat. When we visited last, there was a very friendly labrador, but we can't promise she will be there this time! The walk will end by passing through the estate of Fountains Abbey and Studley Park deer park. Then we can have a delicious cream tea at the visitor's centre!
