Starting from Skipton railway station at 10.30am we head up to the Leeds–Liverpool canal and follow the scenic towpath approximately 15 miles to Saltaire, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. There should be lots of lovely autumn colours by this time! The going will be easy as the towpath is flat and we'll be going downhill past all the locks rather than up(!), but we will need to maintain a brisk pace in order to complete the route in daylight. The newly refurbished Boathouse pub in Saltaire lies in-between the canal and the River Aire overlooking the also newly refurbished Robert's Park, and does excellent food as well as all the usual drinks for our refreshment after the walk.
This is designed to be a public transport walk, so we recommend that you travel by train. If you want to come by car that's up to you, but you will have to make your own arrangements for parking and getting between the end and the start of the walk.
Public transport
We'll be travelling on the 0947 train from Leeds to Skipton. Connections are available from York (0858), Selby (0911), Hull (0840), Knaresborough (0851) and Scarborough (0747).
At the end of the walk, there are regular trains from Saltaire back to Leeds, for onward connections back to all those places. The cheapest ticket is likely to be a return ticket to Skipton, rather than two singles.
