We are running a weekend trip to Buttermere, in the Lake District. Buttermere is in the Western Fells, and is one of the quieter valleys with some stunning walking and scenery right on the doorstep. The village itself is a quaint little farming hamlet, unchanged from years gone by.
Kelly has reserved 20 places in the youth hostel for the Friday and Saturday nights, at a cost of £44 each. If you are interested in attending, please get in touch with Kelly at kelly.temple@virgin.net. Payment is due by 20 July. You must be a member of the Ramblers Association to come on this trip.
On Saturday, we will be climbing Haystacks, which lies at the head of the valley. This mountain was said to be Wainwright's favourite Lakeland Fell, and his ashes are scattered here. The walk will involve a relatively straightforward ascent of Fleetwith Pike on a well-trodden footpath. We will then follow the plateau round to Haystacks, passing a series of tarns on the way, with some spectacular views over the surrounding hills and Buttermere and Crummock Water. We then descend down to the lake and return to the hostel along its shores, hopefully getting back in time for tea and cake! It is not intended to be a difficult or technical walk, but it is a long, steady climb to the summit.
We will also have a shorter walk for the Sunday, to be decided.
The hostel offers freshly cooked evening meals, and there are two pubs in the village - we'll decide nearer the time where we're going to eat.
