A relatively gentle introduction to the Cleveland Way, this initial stage follows the beginning of the 108 mile route from Helmsley to the visitor centre at Sutton Bank, with a small detour to the White Horse. We follow the tried and tested Christmas Carol route towards Rievaulx, turning off over the bridge before reaching the abbey. We head through the village of Cold Kirby, and pass the Hambleton Inn before arriving back to the tea rooms at Sutton Bank visitor centre. The route is mostly good paths and some road, but there is a possibility some of it may be waterlogged and there will be mud!
By car: Meet at Sutton Bank Visitor Centre at 9.30am, to get the 9.45 bus to the start point in Helmsley, where we will walk back to the cars at Sutton Bank. If you're not going to make it to Sutton Bank for 9.30, meet us in Helmsley at the Cleveland Way car park by 10.30am, and there are hourly buses all day from Sutton Bank back to Helmsley for after the walk. You will need change for the car park and the bus fare.
By bus: The Moorsbus network starts just in time for us! You can get a bus to the start in Helmsley at 10.30am, and from Sutton Bank back to Helmsley and on home afterwards:
- 128 from Scarborough (0845) and Pickering (0940) - returning from Sutton Bank every hour until 1845
- M15 from York (0925) and Easingwold (0955) - return from Sutton Bank at 1645 on the 128, and change at Helmsley
- M14 from Hull (0745) and Beverley (0825), changing at Pickering to a 128 - return from Sutton Bank at 1745 on the 128, and change at Helmsley
- M11 from Northallerton (0830) and Thirsk (0905) - return from Sutton Bank at 1645 on the 128 and change at Helmsley
