Meeting in the pretty village on the edge of the moors, we set off west across fields and farmland (muddy!), then up the wooded valley of Howl Dale. After being herded through a field by sheep, we stopped for lunch in a wood near Kingthorpe, then crossed into Dalby Forest and joined a good track along the valley of Thornton Dale. Although not a great deal of wildlife around, we did see frogs by the side of the track! After passing the fisheries and watching the trout leaping out of the water, we reached the remote church at Ellerburn. Following a footpath along the side of Thornton Beck, we reached the impressive building of Thornton Mill (it's all very pretty, but the names lack something in imagination), and back to the village for tea and cake.
