Meeting at a litter-strewn layby with views of Emley Moor tower disappearing into the clouds, we set off into the grounds of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where we looked in a mixture of amazement and bewilderment at 12-foot tall hares and all sorts of other incomprehensible creations. After a moment's quiet contemplation looking at the sky from the Deer Shelter, we set off through Bretton Country Park to the hillside village of High Hoyland, then into muddy woodland to Cawthorne. The sun was blazing, and it was a far cry from the miserable weather just a couple of hours earlier.
Neil reassured us that lunch was just around the corner, and a few corners later we arrived on the terrace of Cannon Hall, looking out over the landscaped gardens while we had our lunch. Skirting round Cannon Hall Farm, we were careful not to get tangled up with another walking group on a similar route, negotiated some unusual stiles, and returned by a different route to High Hoyland. A short stretch along the road took us pack to Bretton Country Park and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and then a few spots of rain caught us as we made our way back to the cars.
