Sunday 28 March 2010: Part 1 - Helmsley to Sutton Bank

A relatively gentle introduction to the Cleveland Way, this initial stage follows the beginning of the 108 mile route from Helmsley to the visitor centre at Sutton Bank, with a small detour to the White Horse. We follow the tried and tested Christmas Carol route towards Rievaulx, turning off over the bridge before reaching the abbey. We head through the village of Cold Kirby, and pass the Hambleton Inn before arriving back to the tea rooms at Sutton Bank visitor centre. The route is mostly good paths and some road, but there is a possibility some of it may be waterlogged and there will be mud!
Saturday 24 April 2010: Part 2 - Sutton Bank to Osmotherley

A level walk along the western escarpment edge of the Hambleton Hills overlooking the Vale of York. The trail then leads on to Sneck Yate before climbing a steep, wooded hillside and then joining the Hambleton Drove Road, which was used by cattle drovers in the 18th and 19th centuries, before dropping down to the picturesque Oakdale reservoirs en route to Osmotherley.
Sunday 25 April 2010: Part 3 - Osmotherley to Clay Bank

We initially walk North from Osmotherley and then West following the edge of the escarpment of the North York Moors. We should get good views first West to the Dales and then North over the villages and landscape at the foot of the moors with Teeside in the distance. The footpaths are all wide easy tracks however be warned this section is quite hilly.
Sunday 23 May 2010: Part 4 - Clay Bank to Great Ayton

The walk starts with a steep climb from the road to get our legs going, before joining a track across the moors. We then swing back to enjoy fine views across Teeside and the previous section of the Cleveland way. We then drop down to the village of Kildale, before a steep climb up to the woods which lead up us to the Captain Cook's monument. From here we leave the Cleveland Way for a couple of miles back to the cars in Great Ayton.
Saturday 26 June 2010: Part 5 - Gribdale Gate to Saltburn

The last moorland stage of the Cleveland Way, from Gribdale Gate we climb up onto the moors to Roseberry Topping, giving spectactular views across Teesside and the Vale of York. We drop down through a forest and then across farmland and finally along a steep-sided wooded valley to the seaside at Saltburn.
Saturday 24 July 2010: Cleveland Way (Part 6) - Saltburn to Runswick Bay

The first coastal section of the Cleveland Way, we start at the seaside resort of Saltburn and head east along the North Sea coastline. The route is quite undulating as it goes over the cliff tops, up to 600 feet in places! We pass through Skinningrove and Staithes before reaching the end at Runswick Bay.

The longest and toughest section of the Cleveland Way, this walk involves some steep climbs, a couple of miles walking along a sandy beach, superb views from the clifftops, and battling our way through Whitby on a summer Saturday, finishing with fish and chips on the beach at Robin Hood's Bay.
Saturday 11 September 2010: Cleveland Way (Part 8) - Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough

The first half of our Scarborough weekend takes us from the steep and pretty fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay over the clifftops past Boggle Hole, Ravenscar, Hayburn Wyke and Scalby Mills, ending at the front in Scarborough, for ice creams, donkey rides and sandcastles. This walk features several short, steep climbs.
Sunday 12 September 2010: Cleveland Way (Part 9) - Scarborough to Filey

We walk along the esplanade which offers great views of Scarborough south bay. We then follow the cliff top path past Knipe Point towards the beautiful Cayton Bay. At Cayton Bay we tackle the steepest climb of the walk. At the end we reach the small and charming town of Filey. From Filey Brigg you can observe Scarborough in one direction and the chalk cliffs of Flamborough in the other.
